A VERY RARE 54-BORE PERCUSSION 'HAMMERLESS' REVOLVER, MODEL 'PENNELL'S PATENT', no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with re-blued octagonal 5 1/2in. sighted barrel signed on the top flat 'OWEN POWELL, SHEFFIELD', engraved band at muzzle, scroll engraving at breech, pivoting barrel-catch stamped 'PATENT', plain cylinder of transitional revolver form with Birmingham proofs, open frame engraved with borderlines and scrolls on the receiver, the top of action signed 'PATENT' within a banner, safety-stud on the left side together with a belt-hook (possibly replaced), enclosed striker, scroll engraved top-tang and trigger-guard, moulded iron butt-cap with central scroll engraved trapdoor with void for caps, finely chequered one-piece walnut butt and vacant silver oval escutcheon to rear, the whole re-finished
